Legionella Pneumophila : a serious danger to human health

The risk of contamination is high because:

  • operating temperatures fall within the proliferation range of Legionella (25-55 °C);
  • there is often a layer of bio film on the internal walls of the cooling towers which promotes microbial growth (ensuring the protection and sustenance of the microorganisms);
  • their position outside and often positioned up high promotes the distribution of aerosol at a distance in some cases plumes can form which carry the contaminated aerosol km away causing real epidemics;
  • the effects which can cause contamination of the cooling water can be outside the working environment and also involve the social environment;
  • the presence of bio film could make normal disinfectants ineffective.

For all these reason Ministerial Guidelines require that the towers are cleaned and collection tanks are emptied at least twice a year and every time there is a prolonged technical stoppage.
